Being
Brutal to Brutalism.
The school revolves around the theory of questioning architecture and its whole being(movements, structure, materials). The school is located at Spooner Road, Singapore. The site has 2 low raised brutalist apartments, once used by Malaysian railway staff in the 70s. In 2011, the train service to Malaysia ceased and in recent years, the site has been abandoned.
Singapore’s natural landscape is dominated by brutalist buildings and it is only right to design the school around the urban landscape. I chose the site for its vacancy and the close distance between the two buildings which forms an urban valley.
The school is divided and connected by the bridge. The building on the left is the student block while the other, the staff block. Before designing the bridge, spaces used by students (studio/ meeting/ workshop/ computer lab/ interior gallery) and staff (offices/ meeting/ research) are identified and placed in the respective buildings.
The bridge between the two buildings is designed as a common ground for students and staff. An exterior gallery, resting areas, library and lecture hall are strategically positioned on the bridge. Each level is dictated to a particular space. For instance, the library is leveled on the same level as the studio for easy access.
The bridge is made to juxtapose with the brutalist buildings. In order to question brutalism, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona pavilion was an inspiration. The free-flowing plan contrasts the order of Brutalism and the rigidness of its structure. Therefore, I made the walls as the main focus and changed the axis of the bridge.
Instead of viewing walls that only touch the ground and ceiling, I extruded the walls out of the bridge, making them look madly unsafe and floating in mid-air. In addition, I created numerous narrow cut out on the concrete slabs to emphasize my design approach (refer to still images).
The result of this brutal concept is a cruel one to Brutalism.
